Mary smiled at her, although her smile was slightly weak. She was grateful to have a friend like Lily, who cared so much about her. But she didn’t one Lily to get involved. Not because she didn’t want Lily to have anything to do with her and Sirius’ relationship, but that she didn’t want her to ruin what she had with James, especially when they were becoming so close. “I should have listened to you in the first place.” She turned her head back to the lake. “I should have known I would never ever have a chance with him.”

Lily sighed in frustration. “Ugh! You don’t understand, do you?” She pulled a shard of grass out of the ground. “I thought Sirius might have been different with you! At first, anyway. I really wanted you and him to be together! You’re so calm and down to earth… And that’s just was an egotistical idiot like Sirius Black needs! But he’s to damn afraid of commitment to bloody admit that he likes you too!” Lily gasped and bit her lip nervously as she met Mary’s eye. She really wished she hadn’t said that.
